South Korea will ban using radioactive materials in consumer goods this year following public concerns over radon gas emitted from various products, the government said Tuesday.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said the government finalized this year's policy aimed at preventing a recurrence of radon contamination concerns, including banning the use of the radioactive mineral monazite.

The commission said the use of monazite ― a mineral known as the main reason for the emission of radon ― will be banned in all products that come in close contact with people.

The plans come as a number of consumer products ranging from mattresses to accessories have been found to emit higher-than-permissible levels of radon gas. 

Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that can be found in nature as an indirect decay product of uranium or thorium. Being exposed to radon for long periods of time can lead to lung cancer.

The agency said it will also ban advertising the health benefits of "negative ion-releasing" products, such as mattresses and bracelets.

In an aim to prevent accidents at nuclear power reactors, the agency plans to push forward a law that mandates more communication with people living closer to the site.

Also, the agency aims to conduct health checkups for all 20,000 people working in areas that compel them to be exposed to more radiation than the general public by 2020. (Yonhap)

The National Assembly passed a bill on the designation of fine dust as a social disaster Wednesday as South Korea struggles with its worst-ever particle pollution.

Parliament opened a plenary session to deal with several bills on fine dust as rival parties have pledged bipartisan efforts to tackle the issue.

The proposal on fine dust as a social disaster will pave the way for the government to inject state money when an urgent need for expenditure arises.

Other bills on particulate matter include a proposal on deregulation of the uses of liquid national gas (LNG) vehicles and a measure that requires schools to install air purifiers.

Fine dust air pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing issues here. The country was choked by particulate matter for a record streak of seven straight days in early March.

The ruling Democratic Party (DP) and two opposition parties agreed last week to vote on the bills Wednesday and consider an extra budget to fight fine dust if the government draws it up.

They called on the government to spend reserve funds swiftly to provide supplies, such as anti-dust masks, to the underprivileged.

The parties also decided to send a delegation to Beijing to promote cooperation between the two countries in tackling fine dust, a large portion of which is believed to have blown in from China.

Political parties are keen to resolve the fine dust issue ahead of next year's parliamentary elections as it could affect their public support ratings, given the issue's direct impact on people's health and welfare.

President Moon Jae-in has ordered the government to take extraordinary measures to fight fine dust pollution.

He called for interagency efforts last week, including the installation of high-capacity air purifiers in more day care centers and schools.

Moon also instructed government officials to work with China and called for his country to put forward its own response, such as the permanent shutdown of aged power plants that use fossil fuel. (Yonhap)

A brawl at a nightclub affiliated with Seungri of boy band Big Bang is rapidly expanding into a scandal that is rocking the entertainment industry, with fellow K-pop star Jung Joon-young being booked for illicitly recording and sharing sex videos.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said, Tuesday, that it booked Jung as a suspect following allegations that he secretly filmed women he was having sex with and shared the videos with acquaintances, including Seungri, in several mobile group chat rooms. The allegations were first reported by local broadcaster SBS, Monday night.

Jung, 30, a singer and TV celebrity who rose to fame following a runner-up finish in a talent show in 2012, is suspected of having recorded the videos without the consent of the women. There are at least 10 women who were filmed over a period of 10 months since the end of 2015, police said.

According to the law on sexual violence, those who film a person's body without consent can face a prison term of up to five years or a fine of 30 million won ($26,500). Separately, those who distribute such photos or videos without consent ― even though the partner agreed to the filming of it ― are subject to five years in prison or a 30 million won fine.

Jung's alleged wrongdoings are drawing extra attention as he was accused by an ex-girlfriend in 2016 of filming them having sex, without her consent ― although he was acquitted after she dropped the charge.

Amid snowballing criminal allegations that Seungri of globally popular K-pop boy band BIGBANG was behind a sex-for-business favor deal, the singer on Monday offered to retire entirely from the entertainment scene.

"It would be better for me to retire from the entertainment scene at this point," Seungri said in a post on his Instagram account.

"As this social scandal is too big, I decided on my retirement. As for the ongoing probe, I will take the investigation seriously to clear all the allegations," he said.

The 29-year-old singer and businessman was officially booked over the weekend on suspicions that he procured sex services for potential investors.

A media report previously claimed that Seungri, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun, used multiple nightclubs in Seoul's posh Gangnam area as places for lobbying using sexual favors.

The police have also been investigating Burning Sun, a nightclub where he was a public relations director, over suspicions about illegal narcotics use, sexual assaults and corrupt deals with police officials at the club.

As the allegations grew, Seungri suspended his entertainment career in late February and canceled concerts originally set for mid-March.

"I give my heartfelt, sincere thanks to fans at home and abroad who gave their love for the past 10 years, and I think this should be it for the sake of the reputation of YG (Entertainment) and BIGBANG," Seungri said in the Instagram post. (Yonhap)

K-pop sensation BTS is sharpening up for its upcoming album. 

The seven-member boy band is working on the album, and the exact date of its return will soon be revealed, according to its agency Big Hit Entertainment, Monday. The date will be unveiled on the official website. 

The group is likely to make its comeback by mid-April, and will film its music videos this week, according to reports. The comeback was reportedly scheduled for May, but was brought forward due to schedule adjustment. 

BTS released its third repackaged album "LOVE YOURSELF 結'ANSWER'" in August, which topped the Billboard 200 Chart. The group will begin a world tour on May 4.

The rising influence of Korea's cultural content such as K-pop and e-Sports has quickly become a driving force to expand Instagram's global reach, said the CEO of the photo and video-sharing social network service, Monday.

"K-pop is not just a local phenomenon but a world phenomenon," Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri said during a press conference in Facebook Korea's headquarters in southern Seoul.

The Instagram executive explained K-pop has been one of the most popular types of content on its platform for the past four years since 2015. K-pop music-related content has been especially popular on Instagram among countries such as Indonesia, the United States and Brazil, the firm said.

Mosseri also said its Instagram Stories service has helped the firm expand rapidly. Introduced in 2016, the feature allows users to post videos or photos which stay on the users' accounts for 24 hours, then disappearing. Instagram said there are more than 5 million daily active users of the feature and the figure in Korea in December 2018 increased by 50 percent year-on-year.

E-Sports is another sector that helps the firm expand its footprint, the CEO said. "People love to follow Griffin's team account but also follow player accounts, he said.

Mosseri visited LoL Park, an e-Sports stadium in Seoul for Riot Games' 'League of Legends' to watch the Korean league of the online combat game, Sunday.

He said Instagram has seen more than 1 million users who posted e-Sports-related content within the past 90 days.

BTS member Suga celebrated his 26th birthday on Saturday by making a donation to a non-profit foundation that supports child cancer patients.

According to the Korea Pediatric Cancer Foundation, the singer donated 100 million won ($88,000) and 329 dolls under the name of his fan club "ARMY."

The foundation said Suga decided to do so to give back the love he has received from his fans. He is known to have designed the dolls himself.

"We will make sure the donation will be used to help the children," the foundation said.

This is not the first time Suga has given money to a charitable cause. On his last birthday, he gave 10 kilograms of hanwoo, prime Korean beef, to orphanages.
