Asiana Airlines' credibility among investors further fell Friday after its share trading was halted following an auditor's negative opinion on the airline's financial status, according to analysts and officials Friday. 

The company will be placed on the bourse operator's watch list, Monday, which many expect will force institutional investors to dump the firm's shares. Trading will resume, Tuesday.

According to the Korea Exchange (KRX), Korea's No. 2 air carrier was halted from trading Friday until Monday, following the audit report by Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers which issued a "qualified" opinion.

"Qualified" means that the auditor's auditing scope was limited because it could not gain more evidence for its decision or the company's financial records were not in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. "Unqualified" opinion means a company's financial records are clean and do not have any misrepresentations.

The auditor explained it gave the negative opinion because it could not obtain evidence of debt from maintenance costs for the carriers' leased aircraft, collectable amounts of assets showing signs of damage and several other valuations of the company's assets. 

The bourse operator will designate Asiana Airlines as a stock under surveillance on Monday, which is a warning to investors that the stock has the possibility of being delisted.

The KRX said being on the watch list does not necessarily mean that the stock is under a delisting review, but institutional investors will likely dump the shares because most investment firms have their own regulations of excluding such stocks from their portfolio.

"A decline in Asiana Airlines stock price seems to be inevitable as the market has lost trust in the company's financial records," Daishin Securities analyst Yang Ji-hwan said.

"Asiana Airlines said it will make efforts to acquire unqualified status as soon as possible, but that will be available only through the semiannual audit report."

Casting a deeper concern for the carrier is the audit report may drag down its poor credit rating further and trigger creditors to call in debts worth nearly 1 trillion won. 

To cope with its liquidity shortage, Asiana Airlines has been issuing asset-backed securities throughout last year, the outstanding amount is worth 1.2 trillion won. 

In issuing those securities, the company has obliged itself to repay the debts earlier than mature dates when its senior corporate bonds rating fell below the current BBB rated by the Korea Investors Service. If the rating house make a cut in the ratings, the carrier's liquidity problems will be aggravated, analysts said.

The financial report bungle will likely trigger setbacks in its parent group's efforts to address its financial troubles. Kumho Asiana Group sold its headquarters building in central Seoul last year for liquidity and is preparing for the initial public offering of Kumho Buslines, which is a de facto holding company of the group.

The number of multiracial marriages reached a four-year high of 22,698 in 2018, according to Statistics Korea, Wednesday.

The figure rose by 1,863, or nearly 9 percent, from the year before, the highest increase in 13 years, it added.

Multiracial marriages accounted for 8.8 percent of the total marriages in 2018, up 0.9 percentage points from 2017. 

The number of Korean men marrying foreign women accounted for 73 percent of the total multiracial marriages here.

They married Vietnamese women the most, accounting for 38.2 percent.

This was followed by Chinese brides at 22.1 percent, and Thai women at 9.4 percent.

In comparison, Chinese men wedding Korean brides accounted for 24.4 percent, followed closely by Americans at 23.6 percent and Vietnamese at 9.6 percent.

The number of overall marriages, however, hit the lowest in more than 40 years as more young Koreans have been delaying walking down the aisle.

This is because of an economic slowdown, the statistics agency noted.

It reached 257,622 in 2018, down from 264,455 in 2017.

In 1972, the number of couples who got married reached 244,780.

With the delay, the average age of Korean men getting married also increased to 33 years last year, up from 32 in 2017.

The country's birthrate fell below 1 per woman last year. The rate measures how many babies a woman is likely to give birth to in her lifetime.

The data also showed the number of divorces stood at 108,684 in 2018, up 2.5 percent from a year earlier.

Twelve Korean banks saw record earnings in Vietnam in 2018, according to data from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), Tuesday.

The banks' net incomes in the region more than doubled from $61 million in 2017 to $131.8 million in 2018. 

Shinhan Bank Vietnam made the biggest contribution to the lenders' overall growth there as it posted nearly 100 billion won ($88 million) in net profit last year.

Their combined net income in Singapore also grew by 17.2 percent in 2018; while assets also grew in Vietnam and Indonesia. 

The banks' profits from business in Vietnam grew from $5.72 billion in 2017 to $6.43 billion in 2018; and in Indonesia from 5.76 billion to $6.34 billion.

In 2018, the twelve Korean banks were operating in 39 countries through 55 subsidiaries, 77 branches and 57 offices, and most of their overseas operations, or nearly 70 percent were concentrated in Asia.

New openings were also concentrated in the region ― out of seven, four were opened in Cambodia and one in Bangladesh.

"We continue to see increasing profits in Asia," an FSS official said. "The scale of assets in the region is not very great compared to that of other larger economies but continues to grow." 

Shinhan Bank said its stellar growth in Southeast Asia, especially in Vietnam, was due to its well-executed strategy and services tailored to local customers. 

"We believe it's due to localization strategies, as the bank has focused securing local customers, hiring local employees and local executives, and increasing the percentage of local assets," a Shinhan Bank official said.

The FSS assessed the banks did better in terms of localization in 2018 than a year earlier.

According to the FSS, the total asset volume of overseas businesses came to $114.25 billion, up 8.9 percent from a year earlier. The banks' overseas businesses reported a net income of $983 million for 2018, up 22.2 percent from a year earlier. This was due to considerable increases in interest and non-interest incomes.

Meanwhile, FSS First Senior Deputy Governor Yoo Kwang-yeol is in Southeast Asia for meetings with his regulatory counterparts to discuss Korean financial companies' businesses there.

He was in Jakarta Monday and will hold meetings in Hanoi Wednesday and Thursday.

This is the first visit by members of the FSS management in four years ― the last took place in 2015 under then governor Zhin Woong-seob.

An FSS official said "There is a lot more to discuss with our counterparts there because the presence of Korean finance companies in the region has grown significantly over the past years."

2018년에는 국내 12개 은행이 55개 자회사, 77개 지점, 57개 사무소를 통해 39개국에서 영업을 하고 있었으며, 해외 영업의 70%에 가까운 대부분이 아시아에 집중되어 있었습니다.

또한 7개 중 4개가 캄보디아에, 1개는 방글라데시에 각각 개점하였습니다.

금감원 관계자는 "아시아 지역에서 수익이 계속 늘고 있다"며 "이 같은 기간 국내 시장에서도 수익률이 계속 상승하고 있다"고 말했습니다. "이 지역의 자산 규모는 다른 큰 규모의 경제에 비해 그리 크지 않지만 계속 증가하고 있습니다." 

신한은행은 동남아, 특히 베트남에서 괄목할 만한 성장을 한 것은 현지 고객에 맞춘 전략과 서비스 덕분입니다. 

신한은행 관계자는 "은행에서 현지 고객 확보와 현지 직원 및 현지 임원 채용, 현지 자산 비중 확대 등에 주력해 온 만큼 현지화 전략 때문인 것으로 본다"고 말했습니다.

금감원은 2018년 국내 은행들의 실적이 1년 전보다 좋아졌다고 평가했습니다.

금감원에 따르면 해외사업장의 자산총액은 1142억5000만 달러로 전년 대비 8.9% 증가했습니다. 은행들의 해외사업장은 2018년 순이익이 전년보다 22.2% 증가한 9억8300만 달러를 기록했다고 합니다. 이는 이자 및 비이자 소득의 상당한 증가 때문이었다.

한편 유광열 금감원 제1차장은 동남아에서 한국 금융회사의 사업에 대해 논의하기 위해 감독기관들과 회의를 하고 있습니다.

그는 월요일 자카르타에 있었고 수요일과 목요일 하노이에서 회의를 열 예정입니다.

금감원 경영진이 방문한 것은 4년 만입니다.

금감원 관계자는 지난 몇 년간 국내 금융회사들의 현지 진출이 크게 늘었기 때문에 현지 거래처와 협의할 것이 훨씬 많다고 말했습니다.

An increasing number of merchants are expressing frustration toward "Zero Pay," a mobile QR code-based payment that enables a direct transaction between consumers and merchants without using credit cards. 

The new method was initially welcomed by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the self-employed as an ideal alternative to using credit cards that charge what they claim are "unreasonably high" transaction fees.

However, the time-consuming, complicated transaction approval process is increasingly irking both the merchants and customers.

"It's the height of inconvenience," said a man in his 50s running a small eatery in Jongno, Seoul. 

"It takes up to two minutes for each transaction from when a customer runs the QR code app from their mobile phone to enter the price amount until I make sure the cash transfer is complete, a process that requires five seconds tops using a credit card," he added. 

Using the system is in no way a help in boosting profit when everybody is in a hurry especially during lunch or dinner hours.

"Time is money. I don't want to waste time to make the payment process longer than what it has been. Neither would the customers."

According to data from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), only 8,633 transactions totaling some 199 million won ($175,000) were made using Zero Pay in January.

The number accounts for a mere 0.0006 percent of 156 million transactions, and the amount 0.0003 percent of 58.1 trillion won made with credit card firms in the same period. 

In January, only 46,628 SMEs in Seoul registered to use the payment system, accounting for less than 10 percent of the over 660,000 such enterprises in the city.

A much greater hassle is inevitable as cash transfers are designed to be confirmed only by an account holder, the business owner, not part-time workers. 

"Part-timers can help customers scan QR codes and enter price amounts. But at the end of the day, cash is wired to my account, which means I have to constantly be notified of and check each and every sale made at the shop," said the shop owner.

"I cannot have my employees access the account freely. No shop owners would."

Not being able to use a point of sale (POS) system is another major deterrent to using Zero Pay. 

Through a POS system, the merchant calculates the total amount for services and goods provided and prepare an invoice for the customer in one step. The system is widely used to calculate sales involving credit cards in one simple step, an easy way to file tax reports. 

But Zero Pay is considered a cash transaction, which requires a whole different set of rules to calculate sales tax.

"I don't understand why the city government is in such a rush to implement a system with obvious shortfalls. If it really seeks to help SMEs, they should care about making the system fully functional before asking us to use it," he added.

특히 점심시간이나 저녁시간에는 모두가 급할 때 이 시스템를 사용하는 것이 수익을 높이는 데 전혀 도움이 되지 않습니다.

"시간은 돈입니다. 지불과정이 예전보다 길어진 시스템을 사용하기 위해 시간을 낭비하고 싶지는 않습니다. 고객들도 마찬가지입니다."

금융감독원 자료에 따르면 1월 제로페이를 이용한 거래액은 8633건(17만5000달러)에 그쳤다.

이 숫자는 1억5600만 건의 거래 중 0.0006%에 불과하며 같은 기간 카드사와 맺은 58조1000억 원 중 0.0003%다. 

지난 1월, 서울에 있는 46만 6천개 이상의 중소기업 중 오직 46,628개 중소기업만이 결제 시스템을 사용하려고 등록했는데, 이는 서울시의 66만개가 넘는 기업들 중 10퍼센트 미만을 차지합니다.

가장 큰 불편함은 거래 확인의 설계가 계좌 보유자인 사업주만 가능하다는 점입니다. 

"파트타이머는 고객이 QR 코드를 스캔하고 가격 금액을 입력할 수 있습니다. 하지만 결국, 현금이 제 계좌에 연결되기 때문에, 저는 매점에서 매매를 할 때마다 계속해서 통보 받고 확인을 받아야 합니다,"라고 가게 주인은 말했습니다.

KB Kookmin Bank Cambodia has forged an alliance with Pi Pay in digital banking in Phnom Penh, the bank said, Sunday.

The two sides will seek to connect their respective platforms not only to offer convenient mobile payment services, but also to develop new financial products for local customers, the Seoul-based bank added.

Pi Pay is Cambodia's biggest mobile payment company with over 250,000 users who can settle transactions at 3,500 local retail stores via its application.

The Cambodian fintech startup, which was launched in 2017, handled transactions worth $150 million as of the end of December 2018.

Pi Pay also has ties with Alibaba's Alipay.

KB Kookmin Bank said the bank's Liiv digital platform will be connected to Pi Pay, enabling the Korean bank to join Pi Pay's local retail network.

They will create loan products, which will be offered via the two platforms.

"KB Kookmin Bank's Liiv will seek to forge ties with various Southeast Asian market leaders to further foray into retail banking in the region with success," said Choi Chang-su, managing director of the bank's global business, in a press statement.

The bank will also further promote its Liiv platform with Cambodia-based Express Food Group's (EFG) Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, beginning in April.

EFG operates franchises such as Krispy Kreme, the Pizza Company and Swensen's Ice Cream & Sundaes. Liiv users will be able to settle their payments at Krispy Kreme. 

KB's Liiv in Cambodia has 76,000 users. The digital platform handled overseas wire transfers worth $17 million last year. It also extended loans worth $19 million in 2019, according to the bank.

KB Kookmin Bank Cambodia opened in 2009 through the launch of its headquarters in Phnom Penh.

Boy band FT Island former member Choi Jong-hoon appeared before police Saturday for questioning in a snowballing sex video scandal.

Choi is suspected of having received and watched illegal videos uploaded by Jung Joon-young, who is at the center of the affair, through mobile chat messenger KakaoTalk.

Seungri of K-pop boy band BIGBANG, Yong Jun-hyung of Highlight and Lee Jong-hyun of CNBLUE are known to have been members of the chat group that exchanged such videos.

"I will faithfully undergo questioning. I am very sorry to the public for causing concern," Choi said upon arriving at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.

Choi is also accused of having asked a high-ranking police official to use his influence to prevent newspapers from reporting on drunk driving incident involving him three years ago. He has denied the accusation.

The 29-year old was kicked out of FT Island right after his involvement surfaced, while Seungri and Yong Jun-hyung have faced similar fates.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday that he is hopeful nuclear negotiations with North Korea will continue, after Pyongyang reportedly said it may quit talks.

The two countries came away empty handed from a second summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam last month.

"We are hopeful that we can continue to have conversation, negotiations," Pompeo told reporters.

He added that the United States has "every expectation" that Kim will honor his commitment to Trump and continue refraining from nuclear and missile tests.

The summit ended without an agreement due to differences over the scope of the North's denuclearization and the potential sanctions relief from the U.S.

In Pyongyang, Friday, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui said her regime had no interest in engaging in "negotiations of this kind," criticizing the demands the U.S. had made at the summit, according to Russia's TASS news agency.

She added that the North Korean leader will soon decide on whether to continue the talks and maintain the moratorium on tests.

"I saw the remarks that she made," Pompeo said. "She left open the possibility that negotiations would continue for sure. It's the administration's desire that we continue to have conversations around this."

Choe accused Pompeo and U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton of creating an atmosphere of hostility and mistrust at the summit, which ultimately led to its breakdown.

"They're wrong about that and I was there," he said.

Bolton also rejected such a characterization.

"Well, I think that's inaccurate," he told reporters at the White House. "The president is our decision-maker."

Pompeo expanded that he has a professional relationship with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong-chol, and that the two have detailed conversations.

"I expect that we will continue to do that," he said, adding that this was not the first time the North Koreans had cast him in unfavorable terms.

"I have a vague recollection of being called gangster-like from a visit that I took one time previously," he said.

Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang in July to follow up on the first summit between Trump and Kim in Singapore in June. Shortly after he left, the North lashed out at him for making "gangster-like" demands.

Bolton, who is known to be hawkish on the North, said he has spoken to his South Korean counterpart, Chung Eui-yong, to discuss their response to the North Korean statements.

"I'd like to speak further within the U.S. government before we respond," he said. (Yonhap)

금요일 평양에서 최손희 북한 외무성 부상은 북한 정권은 이런 종류의 협상에 관심이 없다고 말하면서 정상회담에서 미국이 요구했던 것을 비난했다고 러시아 타스통신이 보도했다.

그녀는 북한 지도자가 곧 회담을 지속하고 시험 모라토리엄을 유지할 지 여부를 결정할 것이라고 덧붙였다.

폼페이는 "그녀가 한 발언을 봤다. 그는 "협상이 확실히 이어질 가능성을 열어뒀다. 이 문제를 둘러싸고 계속 대화를 나누는 것이 행정부의 바람이다."
