The combined market capitalization of major listed entertainment agencies sharply lost ground since a sex scandal surrounding K-pop stars rose to the surface last month, market data showed Sunday.

The combined market capitalization of the top five listed entertainment agencies plunged around 600 billion won ($527 million) on Friday from last month, when the police kicked off an investigation into Seungri, a member of BIGBANG, on Feb. 26, on allegations that he arranged prostitution.

The boyband member is also being questioned for taking a part in running a night club where drugs and sexual violence were frequent. 

The listed value of the top five agencies on the country's secondary bourse ― YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment, Cube Entertainment, and FNC Entertainment ― came to 2.7 trillion won as of Friday, down 17.5 percent won from 3.3 trillion won posted on Feb. 25.

While Seungri was contracted to YG Entertainment, market watchers said investors' appetite for entertainment shares fell amid the increasing uncertainties on the snowballing sex scandal.

"As new and unusual allegations continue to come up to the surface every day in relation to the latest sex scandal, investors' sentiment also deteriorated as they wish to avoid uncertainties," Yoo Sung-man, a researcher at HMC Investment Securities Co. said.

"It will take a long time for entertainment firms to regain investors' trust," Yoo added.

Boy band FT Island former member Choi Jong-hoon appeared before police Saturday for questioning in a snowballing sex video scandal.

Choi is suspected of having received and watched illegal videos uploaded by Jung Joon-young, who is at the center of the affair, through mobile chat messenger KakaoTalk.

Seungri of K-pop boy band BIGBANG, Yong Jun-hyung of Highlight and Lee Jong-hyun of CNBLUE are known to have been members of the chat group that exchanged such videos.

"I will faithfully undergo questioning. I am very sorry to the public for causing concern," Choi said upon arriving at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency.

Choi is also accused of having asked a high-ranking police official to use his influence to prevent newspapers from reporting on drunk driving incident involving him three years ago. He has denied the accusation.

The 29-year old was kicked out of FT Island right after his involvement surfaced, while Seungri and Yong Jun-hyung have faced similar fates.

The scandal has put the local entertainment industry under the microscope, drawing criticism from a public dismayed at the news and creating a swirl of other rumors and speculation about who the women in Jung's videos were. (Yonhap)

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday that he is hopeful nuclear negotiations with North Korea will continue, after Pyongyang reportedly said it may quit talks.

The two countries came away empty handed from a second summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam last month.

"We are hopeful that we can continue to have conversation, negotiations," Pompeo told reporters.

He added that the United States has "every expectation" that Kim will honor his commitment to Trump and continue refraining from nuclear and missile tests.

The summit ended without an agreement due to differences over the scope of the North's denuclearization and the potential sanctions relief from the U.S.

In Pyongyang, Friday, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui said her regime had no interest in engaging in "negotiations of this kind," criticizing the demands the U.S. had made at the summit, according to Russia's TASS news agency.

She added that the North Korean leader will soon decide on whether to continue the talks and maintain the moratorium on tests.

"I saw the remarks that she made," Pompeo said. "She left open the possibility that negotiations would continue for sure. It's the administration's desire that we continue to have conversations around this."

Choe accused Pompeo and U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton of creating an atmosphere of hostility and mistrust at the summit, which ultimately led to its breakdown.

"They're wrong about that and I was there," he said.

Bolton also rejected such a characterization.

"Well, I think that's inaccurate," he told reporters at the White House. "The president is our decision-maker."

Pompeo expanded that he has a professional relationship with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong-chol, and that the two have detailed conversations.

"I expect that we will continue to do that," he said, adding that this was not the first time the North Koreans had cast him in unfavorable terms.

"I have a vague recollection of being called gangster-like from a visit that I took one time previously," he said.

Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang in July to follow up on the first summit between Trump and Kim in Singapore in June. Shortly after he left, the North lashed out at him for making "gangster-like" demands.

Bolton, who is known to be hawkish on the North, said he has spoken to his South Korean counterpart, Chung Eui-yong, to discuss their response to the North Korean statements.

South Korea will ban using radioactive materials in consumer goods this year following public concerns over radon gas emitted from various products, the government said Tuesday.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said the government finalized this year's policy aimed at preventing a recurrence of radon contamination concerns, including banning the use of the radioactive mineral monazite.

The commission said the use of monazite ― a mineral known as the main reason for the emission of radon ― will be banned in all products that come in close contact with people.

The plans come as a number of consumer products ranging from mattresses to accessories have been found to emit higher-than-permissible levels of radon gas. 

Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that can be found in nature as an indirect decay product of uranium or thorium. Being exposed to radon for long periods of time can lead to lung cancer.

The agency said it will also ban advertising the health benefits of "negative ion-releasing" products, such as mattresses and bracelets.

In an aim to prevent accidents at nuclear power reactors, the agency plans to push forward a law that mandates more communication with people living closer to the site.

Also, the agency aims to conduct health checkups for all 20,000 people working in areas that compel them to be exposed to more radiation than the general public by 2020. (Yonhap)

Have Seungri and Jung Joon-young behaved badly under the protection of the police chief? 

Police started investigating such allegations on Wednesday after an attorney revealed a "ranking police officer" and the scandalized singers maintained cozy ties. 

Bang Jung-hyun, the attorney, dropped the bombshell based on records of a group chat involving the two, which he submitted to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission for investigation. 

Police confirmed Jung wrote "the national police commissioner is behind me" in a group chat in July 2016. The message was sent along with a photo Jung took inside a hostess bar, according to police. The group chat included several celebrity friends of Jung, including Seungri and employees of Burning Sun, a defunct nightclub affiliated with Seungri. 

The police chief in June 2016 was Kang Shin-myung. 

Jung and Seungri are under police investigation for their alleged wrongdoings ― allegations of sex-for-business favors against Seungri and allegations that Jung filmed and distributed videos of himself having sexual relations with women. 

In a hurriedly arranged press briefing, incumbent police chief Min Gap-ryong pledged a "thorough" investigation into the allegations. 

"I will mobilize all police resources to get to the bottom of the case and uncover the truth," Min told reporters. 

The top police officer said an internal audit has already begun. 

Meanwhile, he said the group chat included messages hinting that K-pop band F.T. Island's Choi Jong-hoon was caught drunk driving in March 2016 but it was covered up thanks to the alleged cozy ties. 

According to cable network YTN, Choi was caught with a 0.05 percent blood alcohol level, which at the time was the bare minimum legal limit. Seoul's Yongsan police station reportedly handled the case quietly, so he was able to continue working normally without public criticism.

2016년 6월 경찰청장은 강신명이었다. 

정 씨와 승리는 승리에 대한 성 접대 의혹과 정 씨가 여성과 성관계를 맺고 있는 자신의 동영상을 촬영해 유포한 혐의로 경찰 조사를 받고 있다. 

서둘러 마련된 언론 브리핑에서 민갑룡 현 경찰청장은 이 혐의에 대한 "엄정한" 수사를 약속했다. 

민씨는 기자들과 만나 "경찰 자원을 총동원해 사건의 진상을 규명하겠다"라고 말했다. 

최고 경찰관은 내부 감사가 이미 시작되었다고 말했다. 

한편 그는 밴드 F.T.아일랜드의 최종훈이 2016년 3월 음주운전으로 적발됐음을 암시하는 메시지가 그룹 채팅에 포함됐지만 유착 관계로 인해 은폐됐다고 밝혔다. 

케이블방송 YTN에 따르면 최 씨는 당시 법정 최저한도로 혈중알코올농도 0.05%로 적발됐다. 서울 용산 경찰서는 이 사건을 조용히 처리한 것으로 알려져 여론의 비난 없이 정상적으로 업무를 계속할 수 있었다.

The National Assembly passed a bill on the designation of fine dust as a social disaster Wednesday as South Korea struggles with its worst-ever particle pollution.

Parliament opened a plenary session to deal with several bills on fine dust as rival parties have pledged bipartisan efforts to tackle the issue.

The proposal on fine dust as a social disaster will pave the way for the government to inject state money when an urgent need for expenditure arises.

Other bills on particulate matter include a proposal on deregulation of the uses of liquid national gas (LNG) vehicles and a measure that requires schools to install air purifiers.

Fine dust air pollution has emerged as one of the most pressing issues here. The country was choked by particulate matter for a record streak of seven straight days in early March.

The ruling Democratic Party (DP) and two opposition parties agreed last week to vote on the bills Wednesday and consider an extra budget to fight fine dust if the government draws it up.

They called on the government to spend reserve funds swiftly to provide supplies, such as anti-dust masks, to the underprivileged.

The parties also decided to send a delegation to Beijing to promote cooperation between the two countries in tackling fine dust, a large portion of which is believed to have blown in from China.

Political parties are keen to resolve the fine dust issue ahead of next year's parliamentary elections as it could affect their public support ratings, given the issue's direct impact on people's health and welfare.

President Moon Jae-in has ordered the government to take extraordinary measures to fight fine dust pollution.

He called for interagency efforts last week, including the installation of high-capacity air purifiers in more day care centers and schools.

Moon also instructed government officials to work with China and called for his country to put forward its own response, such as the permanent shutdown of aged power plants that use fossil fuel. (Yonhap)

양당은 또 중국발 미세먼지 대책에 양국 간 협력을 증진하기 위해 대표단을 베이징에 파견하기로 했다.

정당들은 이 문제가 국민의 건강과 복지에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 점을 감안할 때 내년 총선을 앞두고 미세먼지 문제가 국민 지지율에 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 점에서 이를 해결하기 위해 촉각을 곤두세우고 있다.

문재인 대통령이 미세먼지 오염 퇴치를 위해 비상한 조치를 취하라고 지시했다.

그는 지난주 더 많은 어린이집과 학교에 대용량 공기청정기를 설치하는 등 부처간 노력을 촉구했다.

A brawl at a nightclub affiliated with Seungri of boy band Big Bang is rapidly expanding into a scandal that is rocking the entertainment industry, with fellow K-pop star Jung Joon-young being booked for illicitly recording and sharing sex videos.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said, Tuesday, that it booked Jung as a suspect following allegations that he secretly filmed women he was having sex with and shared the videos with acquaintances, including Seungri, in several mobile group chat rooms. The allegations were first reported by local broadcaster SBS, Monday night.

Jung, 30, a singer and TV celebrity who rose to fame following a runner-up finish in a talent show in 2012, is suspected of having recorded the videos without the consent of the women. There are at least 10 women who were filmed over a period of 10 months since the end of 2015, police said.

According to the law on sexual violence, those who film a person's body without consent can face a prison term of up to five years or a fine of 30 million won ($26,500). Separately, those who distribute such photos or videos without consent ― even though the partner agreed to the filming of it ― are subject to five years in prison or a 30 million won fine.

Jung's alleged wrongdoings are drawing extra attention as he was accused by an ex-girlfriend in 2016 of filming them having sex, without her consent ― although he was acquitted after she dropped the charge.
