Kakao Bank has launched a service to help its customers open a securities service account, the firm said Tuesday. 

The new service will be offered in cooperation with Korea Investment and Securities, a subsidiary of Korea Investment Holdings. Under the collaboration, a Kakao Bank customer will be allowed to open an account with Korea Investment and Securities with a simple click of a button.

The simplified procedure will provide a more user-friendly service, as similar procedures offered by other brokerages included submission of statements specifying personal information including name, home addresses and phone numbers. 

Various promotional events are taking place including offering an immediate balance of 20,000 won ($17). Half will be wired to the bank account and the other half to the securities account. 

Those who trade Korean stocks after opening a brokerage account through Kakao Bank will be given an additional 5,000 won per month for up to one year. The amount will be given regardless of the minimum transaction requirements. Brokerage commission fees will be exempted for an unlimited period of time for customers who use the home trading system or mobile trading system.

"This is a meaningful cooperation. This is our first joint project whereby consumer experience will be significantly improved as our tailored service will maximize their satisfaction," a Kakao Bank official said. Kakao Bank plans to expand the service to make it available to more brokerages in the coming months. The bank plans to expand the service to strengthen mobile and online platforms. 

"Possible services to be pursued include selling funds, or insurance products in the form of bancassurance. We are open to all options to broaden our business perspective," he added.

Asiana Airlines' credibility among investors further fell Friday after its share trading was halted following an auditor's negative opinion on the airline's financial status, according to analysts and officials Friday. 

The company will be placed on the bourse operator's watch list, Monday, which many expect will force institutional investors to dump the firm's shares. Trading will resume, Tuesday.

According to the Korea Exchange (KRX), Korea's No. 2 air carrier was halted from trading Friday until Monday, following the audit report by Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers which issued a "qualified" opinion.

"Qualified" means that the auditor's auditing scope was limited because it could not gain more evidence for its decision or the company's financial records were not in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. "Unqualified" opinion means a company's financial records are clean and do not have any misrepresentations.

The auditor explained it gave the negative opinion because it could not obtain evidence of debt from maintenance costs for the carriers' leased aircraft, collectable amounts of assets showing signs of damage and several other valuations of the company's assets. 

The bourse operator will designate Asiana Airlines as a stock under surveillance on Monday, which is a warning to investors that the stock has the possibility of being delisted.

The KRX said being on the watch list does not necessarily mean that the stock is under a delisting review, but institutional investors will likely dump the shares because most investment firms have their own regulations of excluding such stocks from their portfolio.

"A decline in Asiana Airlines stock price seems to be inevitable as the market has lost trust in the company's financial records," Daishin Securities analyst Yang Ji-hwan said.

"Asiana Airlines said it will make efforts to acquire unqualified status as soon as possible, but that will be available only through the semiannual audit report."

Casting a deeper concern for the carrier is the audit report may drag down its poor credit rating further and trigger creditors to call in debts worth nearly 1 trillion won. 

To cope with its liquidity shortage, Asiana Airlines has been issuing asset-backed securities throughout last year, the outstanding amount is worth 1.2 trillion won. 

In issuing those securities, the company has obliged itself to repay the debts earlier than mature dates when its senior corporate bonds rating fell below the current BBB rated by the Korea Investors Service. If the rating house make a cut in the ratings, the carrier's liquidity problems will be aggravated, analysts said.

The financial report bungle will likely trigger setbacks in its parent group's efforts to address its financial troubles. Kumho Asiana Group sold its headquarters building in central Seoul last year for liquidity and is preparing for the initial public offering of Kumho Buslines, which is a de facto holding company of the group.

The government has decided to lower the stock transaction tax rate by 0.05 percentage points to 0.25 percent this year, and seek to gradually abolish it by 2024.

At the same time, it will increase the scope of capital gains taxes on the trading of KOSPI and KOSDAQ shares, while offering incentives to funds investing in tech companies. 

These are part of comprehensive measures jointly announced Thursday by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Financial Services Commission (FSC) to boost financial innovation and vitalize capital markets by encouraging more investment in startups.

"We will revise the relevant tax laws to benefit funds investing in such companies," President Moon Jae-in said during an event to introduce his administration's vision for financial innovation the same day.

He added the finance ministry will soon draw up a clearer plan to reduce the stock transaction tax in tandem with specifics regarding the capital gains tax.

The tax rate has been fixed at 0.3 percent since the late 1970s. It was reintroduced to keep speculators from the market after the country discontinued imposing the tax to attract investment to develop the capital market in the early 1970s.

Korea's 0.3 percent rate is higher than Singapore's 0.2 percent, and China and Hong Kong's 0.1 percent. The United States and Japan do not have transactions taxes.

Investors had to pay a 0.15 percent tax included in the 0.3 percent rate whenever they bought or sold KOSPI or KOSDAQ listed stocks. The 0.15 percent collected by the government is used for the development of rural areas. This will remain unchanged. 

As the finance ministry and the regulator are increasing state support for startups and investment funds such as venture capital and private equity, they said they hope this will help companies to list and relist their shares first on the KONEX, and then on the main bourse as they grow.

The President said his government will overhaul the system to enable startups to get funding based purely on their technological and future potential, instead of on how much assets such as property and facilities they have. 

FSC Chairman Choi Jong-ku told the press the day before the event that the regulator will change rules governing the listing of those companies in accordance with the sectors in which they operate.

For example, the stock market regulator will not apply the same listing rules to biotech companies that need to go through years of testing their drugs to get approval, as it does with traditional manufacturers. 

"We will apply a set of distinctive rules enabling biotech and other innovative companies to raise funds in the capital market based on their future potential and technology," the FSC chairman said.

He said the FSC will seek to increase the number of companies related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution listed on the KOSDAQ to 80 within the next three years, from the 38 over the past three years.

The combined market capitalization of major listed entertainment agencies sharply lost ground since a sex scandal surrounding K-pop stars rose to the surface last month, market data showed Sunday.

The combined market capitalization of the top five listed entertainment agencies plunged around 600 billion won ($527 million) on Friday from last month, when the police kicked off an investigation into Seungri, a member of BIGBANG, on Feb. 26, on allegations that he arranged prostitution.

The boyband member is also being questioned for taking a part in running a night club where drugs and sexual violence were frequent. 

The listed value of the top five agencies on the country's secondary bourse ― YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment, Cube Entertainment, and FNC Entertainment ― came to 2.7 trillion won as of Friday, down 17.5 percent won from 3.3 trillion won posted on Feb. 25.

While Seungri was contracted to YG Entertainment, market watchers said investors' appetite for entertainment shares fell amid the increasing uncertainties on the snowballing sex scandal.

"As new and unusual allegations continue to come up to the surface every day in relation to the latest sex scandal, investors' sentiment also deteriorated as they wish to avoid uncertainties," Yoo Sung-man, a researcher at HMC Investment Securities Co. said.

"It will take a long time for entertainment firms to regain investors' trust," Yoo added.
