The number of multiracial marriages reached a four-year high of 22,698 in 2018, according to Statistics Korea, Wednesday.

The figure rose by 1,863, or nearly 9 percent, from the year before, the highest increase in 13 years, it added.

Multiracial marriages accounted for 8.8 percent of the total marriages in 2018, up 0.9 percentage points from 2017. 

The number of Korean men marrying foreign women accounted for 73 percent of the total multiracial marriages here.

They married Vietnamese women the most, accounting for 38.2 percent.

This was followed by Chinese brides at 22.1 percent, and Thai women at 9.4 percent.

In comparison, Chinese men wedding Korean brides accounted for 24.4 percent, followed closely by Americans at 23.6 percent and Vietnamese at 9.6 percent.

The number of overall marriages, however, hit the lowest in more than 40 years as more young Koreans have been delaying walking down the aisle.

This is because of an economic slowdown, the statistics agency noted.

It reached 257,622 in 2018, down from 264,455 in 2017.

In 1972, the number of couples who got married reached 244,780.

With the delay, the average age of Korean men getting married also increased to 33 years last year, up from 32 in 2017.

The country's birthrate fell below 1 per woman last year. The rate measures how many babies a woman is likely to give birth to in her lifetime.

The data also showed the number of divorces stood at 108,684 in 2018, up 2.5 percent from a year earlier.

이에 비해 한국 신부와의 결혼은 중국 남성이 24.4%로 가장 많았고, 미국인이 23.6%, 베트남인이 9.6%로 뒤를 이었습니다.

하지만 한국 젊은이들이 결혼 생활을 미루는 경우가 늘면서 전체 결혼 건수는 40여 년 만에 가장 적었습니다.

이는 경기 침체 때문이라고 통계청은 지적했습니다.

2018년에는 25만7622명으로 2017년 26만4455명에 비해 줄었습니다.

1972년 결혼한 커플은 24만4천780쌍에 달했습니다.

이 같은 지연으로 한국 남성의 평균 결혼 연령도 2017년 32세에서 지난해 33세로 늘었습니다.
